I am a proud native New Yorker, born and raised on Long Island. In my mid-twenties, I spent five years living in Baltimore, MD before embarking on a six-year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. Serving was an incredible experience, and I would have continued had it not been for a debilitating back injury. In January 2010, I was honorably discharged and returned to New York with a heart full of hopes and dreams for the future.
Transitioning back to civilian life proved challenging as I grappled with the lasting impact of my service and the memories of war. During this time, I turned to poetry as an outlet, using it to process the complexities of my journey and the struggles I faced.
When writer’s block interrupted my work on a poetry book manuscript, I began to paint. It became a powerful medium for expressing my ideas and emotions and quickly grew into a passion. In the fall of 2021, this passion for abstract painting led me to Asheville, NC, where it has flourished ever since.
I am endlessly grateful to the remarkable individuals who have supported me along the way. You know who you are—thank you for helping me live my dream.
I primarily work with acrylics, drawn to their versatility, vibrancy, and adaptability. However, I strongly believe in the importance of staying open to all possibilities when it comes to materials. For me, the act of creating art goes beyond the boundaries of a single medium. By working with anything I can find—whether it’s traditional art supplies, found objects, or unconventional materials—I allow my artistic process to remain free and unrestrained. This approach not only fuels my creativity but also enables me to explore uncharted territories of expression.
Each material brings its own unique energy, texture, and personality to a piece. By embracing this diversity, I invite every idea to manifest in its own individual style, unrestricted by preconceived notions or limitations. This fluidity allows my work to take on a life of its own, shaped by the interplay of intention and spontaneity. Sometimes, the most unexpected materials become the perfect vehicle for conveying a thought or emotion, adding depth and character that might otherwise remain undiscovered.
For me, art is about discovery—finding beauty and meaning in the overlooked, the discarded, and the unconventional. Whether it’s through bold strokes of acrylic or the integration of found materials, my creative process is a reflection of my journey: ever-evolving, deeply personal, and rooted in the freedom to explore without boundaries.
Finding release from life’s struggles and battles has always been a deeply personal goal of mine, and art has become my sanctuary. In the beginning, I turned to creativity as a way to navigate emotions that words could never quite capture. Through colors and abstract forms, I found a means to externalize feelings that were otherwise intangible—transforming them into something both visible and visceral. This pursuit of release and expression was the foundation of my journey, a principle that still guides every piece I create. Writing those words for my website all those years ago was not just a statement; it was a promise to myself.
As I’ve grown as an artist, my sources of inspiration have also evolved. Today, life itself serves as my greatest muse—the emotions, experiences, and fleeting moments that make up the human journey. I’m also fascinated by the inherent abilities of the paints I use, their textures, and the magic that emerges from experimenting with them. Contrasting colors have a special significance for me; they create tension and harmony, bringing energy and depth to my work. These contrasts allow me to explore balance, chaos, and everything in between, reflecting the dualities we often find in life.
Above all, my ultimate goal is to create art that captivates the viewer. I want my paintings to burst forth with vibrancy and vitality—to "POP!" as I often say. This is why I approach each piece with intention when it comes to my color palette, carefully selecting combinations that evoke strong emotions and command attention. It’s not just about the visual impact; it’s about creating an experience, a connection, and perhaps even a sense of release for those who engage with my work. Through art, I continue to honor that original goal of finding freedom and giving form to the unspoken.
